Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme was set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1979 to attract high-quality international students to the United Kingdom to undertake research. The Scheme is funded through the four UK higher education funding bodies (for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

Participating Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) receive an annual grant to fund ORSAS awards. The grant is allocated by formula and reviewed periodically with regard to postgraduate research student recruitment and related data. ORSAS award holders are selected internally by HEIs.

Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme 2007 awards offer international postgraduate students the opportunity to carry out a broad range of research at well-established UK academic institutions of worldwide recognition. Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme award holders make a valuable contribution, not only to the British research base, but also to economic, scientific, educational and other aspects of life in their own country.

The Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme 2007 is designed to attract high quality research students to at University of Edinburgh or other UK Universities. The awards are open to overseas students undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of study. Each award covers the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses. Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years. The University of Edinburgh is now seeking applications for the 2007-2008 academic session.

Field Of Study
Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme 2007 awards are intended for students of full-time postgraduate research study only and not for those undertaking undergraduate or taught postgraduate study.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be liable to pay tuition fees at the rate applicable to overseas students and must have already applied for admission to a full-time MPhil/PhD research programme of study or currently be pursuing such a programme. They must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Although candidates with an upper second class honours Bachelor's degree (or the overseas equivalent) can be considered, in order to be competitive you should really have a first class Bachelor's degree supplemented by an excellent Master's degree. Other factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.
  2. The University of Edinburgh will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD, or formal equivalent, as a result of direct research training; or who are due to enter the third year of their PhD programme of study. Please also note that if you have applied for consecutive registration where you will start your Master's programme of study in 2007 and your PhD the following year in 2008, that you will not be eligible to apply for an ORS award in 2007.
  3. Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme 2007 awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships such as a Dorothy Hodgkins Postgraduate Award,  Commonwealth Scholarship or a Marshall Scholarship. Students who have previously held an ORS award will not be considered eligible for a second one

Scholarship Amount
Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme 2007 awards provide funding to pay the difference between the international student tuition fees and the home/EU student tuition fees charged by the academic institution that the student attends. ORSAS awards do not cover the home/EU fee element, maintenance or travel expenses.

How to apply

Each application form must be supported by two references, and these must be attached to the application form. Application forms received without references will not be considered. The only criteria for selection are outstanding academic merit and research potential, and therefore references should be as full and informative as possible.

A completed scholarship application form and two references should be received by the College/School Office by the closing date of 1 March 2007 in order to be considered for the scholarship.
