Scholarship Info
The University of Essex, based at Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, received its Royal Charter in 1965. It is one of the UK's leading academic institutions and has an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. The University has 19 departments spanning the Humanities, Social Sciences and Science and Engineering.

There are currently around 7,553 students at the University, 22% of these within the Graduate School. The University is an international community with students from more than 130 countries. In recent assessments Essex has regularly ranked among the top twelve UK universities for the quality of its research, with many of its departments rated as 'outstanding' by international standards.

In recent Teaching Quality Assessments those departments tested all demonstrated the high standard of their teaching. The University was rated among the very best for its teaching with an average score of 22.5 out of 24 for departments assessed up to the end of 2001. In particular, Economics, Electronic Systems Engineering, Government, Philosophy and Sports Science obtained the highest possible mark of 24 points. Essex is also considered to be one of Britain's leading 'social science' universities, housing three major Economic and Social Research Council funded projects.

The Department of Economics is one of the largest departments at the University of Essex. It was founded with the University in 1963 when Professor Richard G. Lipsey left the London School of Economics with Chris Archibald to begin teaching and research in economics at Essex. Since that time many eminent economists have held appointments in the department including Michio Morishima (now retired), Tony Atkinson (now at Nuffield College Oxford), Peter Phillips (now at Yale), Oliver Hart (now at Harvard), Peter Hammond (now at Stanford), Ravi Kanbur (now at Cornell) amongst others.

The Department of Economics at the University of Essex is pleased to announce that four The Department of Economics University of Essex Master Scholarships, each worth £5,000, will be awarded to full-time students who will be enrolled for an MSc programme in the Department of Economics for the academic year 2007-2008. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Eligibility

  1. To be considered for one of these awards, applications for admission onto one of our Master's degree schemes should be received by the Department no later than 30 April 2007. Two applications are necessary: for admission to the University for an MSc scheme taught in the Department of Economics, and, separately, for one of the economics scholarships.

£5,000

How to apply

In addition to an application for admission to the University, consideration for an economics scholarship requires completion and submission of an application form, which is available in MS Word format or pdf format. Each scholarship application must be accompanied by a Statement of Purpose explaining the academic reasons that the applicant believes justifies the award of a scholarship. Applicants should also request at least one of their academic referees to comment on their suitability for a scholarship (or, alternatively, append a separate reference with the scholarship application). Decisions about awards of the scholarships will therefore be made on the basis of the admission documentation, the academic references, and the applicant's Statement of Purpose.
