The University of Canterbury located in Christchurch is one of the top two universities in New Zealand for research quality. The University of Canterbury offers a world-class research with Inspirational teaching and a vibrant campus environment. The UC Emerging Leaders Scholarships is one of scholarships awarded to students who intend to begin their first year of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury, who have completed or are completing a university entrance qualification, and who were at school in the year prior to the closing date for applications.
UC Emerging Leaders Scholarships were established as the Canterbury Undergraduate Scholarships in 2002 by the University of Canterbury to recognise and support top achieving students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury. The first awards were made in 2003. In 2003, they were renamed the “UC Emerging Leaders’ Scholarships” to recognise,not only academic achievement, but potential leadership and sporting/cultural involvement amongst those top students attending the University of Canterbury.

The scholarships shall be awarded by the University Council, on the recommendation of the Academic Board as follows:
Category A: Fourteen (14) scholarships shall be awarded to applicants assessed on the criteria listed in 6(a) below.
Category B: In addition to Category A above, one scholarship shall be awarded to a student enrolled at each of the following schools (seven scholarships in total) in the year prior to enrolment at the University of Canterbury, assessed on the criteria listed in 6(b): Linwood College, Aranui High School, Catholic Cathedral College, Hornby High School, Hillmorton High School, Mairehau High School, Kaiapoi High School.
Category C: In addition to Categories A and B above, one scholarship shall be awarded to a student of Maori background, and one scholarship shall be awarded to a student of Pacific Island background (two scholarships in total), assessed on the criteria listed in 6(c).
Category D: In addition to Categories A, B, and C above, one or more scholarships shall be awarded to students who have applied to enrol in specified degree programmes, assessed on the criteria listed in 6(d). The eligible degree programmes shall be determined each year and advertised in advance of the closing date for applications, according to funding being confirmed by sponsoring Colleges or Departments or Schools of the University.
Category E: In addition to Categories A to D above, scholarships shall be awarded to the Dux (as defined in clause 6(e) below) of each secondary school in Canterbury, South Canterbury, Nelson-Marlborough, North Otago (East Otago High School, St Kevin’s College, Waitaki Boys’ High School and Waitaki Girls’ High School) and the West Coast in the year prior to enrolment at the University of Canterbury.

The scholarships may not be held with any other scholarship or award that comprises payment of tuition fees.
- A condition of acceptance is that each scholar agrees to the University publicising their name, background information provided by the scholar or their school and/or photograph and to be reasonably available for any such promotional activity surrounding the scholarship.
Scholarship Value Each scholarship shall be tenable for one year and be taken up in the year of award, except that a student awarded a Category A or C scholarship may defer taking up the scholarship until beginning their first year in the following year. The current value of each scholarship is $3,500 towards the payment of first-year tuition fees.
